The Year in Dulture Pt 1
The hottest takes in the first half of 2024
This Week Year in Dulture…
Approx 5 minute read:
🤼♂️ Netflix x WWE
👕 Kanye’s Clothes
🎤 The Rap Beef You’re Tired of Hearing About
🤳 TikTok Ban Update
🪞 That Portal Thing
Welcome to limbo mode, where you sleep in til who knows what time and wake up not knowing what day of the week it is. The week between Christmas and New Years is always so weird - should I be resting? Should I be working? Should I take a shot, it’s only Tuesday?
When I did the Dulture recap of the year last year, I’m not gonna lie, it was a fun way of realizing what I really pay attention to on the internet aka what my algorithms are full of - shoes, NBA, video games, and a sprinkling of conspiracy/dumb stories.
And so while we’re in this weird state of mind, let’s reminisce on the year that was 2024. From portals connecting the world ruined by OF girls to trying to figure out what size you are with Kanye’s $20 clothes - this year in Dulture was jam packed with all kinds of stories that I scoured the internet for…or literally just opened IG and saw that Drake was beefing with Kendrick.
Sometimes life serves it up on a silver platter for you 🤷♂️
For all my new readers who just embarked on this Friday morning journey with me, it’s like you skipped all the lectures and now you’re just taking the exam. You ever do that? Show up to the first day of class, grab the syllabus from the professor and then say see you at the final exam?
Maybe it’s just me…man I don’t miss 8AM classes in university.
I digress.
Thank you for reading this year. It means the world to me that you see my email in your inbox on Friday mornings and actually open it vs delete it, which takes even less effort to do. And I get it, I don’t always write about things you enjoy or are interested in. Did you know you could respond to the email and tell me? Or comment on the newsletter on my website - Dulture.Beehiiv.com? Now you do…
Monday Night RAW Moves to Netflix
The year kicked off with Netflix announcing that they would be streaming WWE Monday Night Raw live starting in 2025 - so basically next week. And while the non-wrestling fans in the chat could care less (I personally haven’t watched an episode of Raw since Stone Cold drove a Coors Light truck to the ring), this is turning out to be a much bigger deal than it seems like on the surface.
The whole idea of subscribing to a streaming service is to just get all the content it provides at a single price, which traditionally is cheaper than paying for cable.
However, the outlier with streaming has always been sports (and I guess sports entertainment), which you usually had to pay extra for with cable. I remember having the conversation with my cable provider in 2014 and telling them I only wanted TSN (Canadian ESPN) and they said they just couldn’t give me one channel.
So I just decided to illegally stream sports.
However the hot take of the year is the fact that if streaming services are going to start making live action content a normal thing, I wouldn’t be surprised if they start chopping these alternative content streams up into sections you have to pay for JUST LIKE CABLE.
Or Netflix adds commercials like crappy Amazon Prime has already done.
Kanye’s $20 Clothes
Remember when Kanye launched this clothing line?
Well I’m here to update you that Yeezy.com has A LOT more than “Wet” tank tops on the site now. Ye has updated the site with sweatshirts, t shirts, sweatpants, and these long sweatshirt poncho things, that are all $30 CAD, which I assume is still all $20 USD.
You thought it was hard trying to find your size when you’re drunk browsing through Aliexpress? Try finding your size in Kanye’s clothes - I dare you:
Drake v Kendrick
(The last time I write about this)
Other than to recap the year here and to rage bait people into engaging in my Threads, I’m done with the Drake vs Kendrick conversation.
So where are we at with this whole fiasco that started way back in April?
Drake is currently (almost) suing Universal Music Group because of Kendrick’s use of the P word and pictures of Drake’s house and UMG essentially blessing this
Kendrick is performing at the Super Bowl and we all know what song we’re expecting
According to 50Cent, Drake was fully loaded with many more tracks and revealed a whole opp list Drake has
I think the feud is over…for now. Drake’s going on tour in Australia and Kendrick is performing in a matter of weeks at the biggest thing America looks forward to every year. But I don’t think you’ll hear from me on ANY of that.
TikTok-ing Away
The clock is ticking on TikTok.
Earlier this year a law was enacted in the US that would force TikTok to be banned in the US if it didn’t divest itself from its parent Chinese owned company, Bytedance. Obviously TikTok is appealing this decision and is set to provide oral arguments for why it shouldn’t be banned in the US on January 10th, nine days before the ban is set to take place.
Meanwhile President-elect Trump has stated he will look at TikTok once he is inaugurated later in January. He went from hating TikTok, to saying banning it would give Facebook more power, which he also hated at the time, to now saying TikTok helped engage a lot of younger voters - so obviously he likes TikTok again.
Do we see a surge of creators on IG reels and YT shorts in 2025?
If you’re getting paid, yes. If you’re not getting paid, no.
Update on the Portal
Back in May a portal was installed in New York and Dublin that connected both cities by having people see each other through a digital screen. And yes, I realize that sounds like I just described a Facetime call. The point of the “portal” was to allow citizens of both cities to be able to see one another as if they were there in person together.
And then an OF girl discovered it in New York and just kept flashing the good people of Dublin.
Suffice to say the portal didn’t last much longer after that and the world once again confirmed we can’t have nice things.
The NYC version of the portal has since been moved to Philadelphia where people are loving it…literally as it was initially installed in Philly’s Love Park.
It sounds like the portal is sticking around Philadelphia for a good while as the city is already making plans to include the portal in its 250th birthday in 2026.
