Freaky kicks just in time for Halloween

This Week in Dulture…
Approx 5 minute read:
🎸 Teenage angst
🤳 All these damn AI videos
👟 “Scary” shoes
🏮 Drake lost
Dulture weekly mix
Man, it’s not even confusing cold in the morning, warm in the afternoon anymore. It’s just chilly, and you know what that means, we be INSIDE.
And what better way to spend your time inside but with a little music.
DJ Shtoops had never heard these songs before this mix, have you??
Who knew you’d revisit your high school self this much??
The beauty of Spotify is it’s what I always hoped my Winamp playlist would grow into back in the Napster/KaZaa era.

If you’re from the era this may look familiar
I don’t think you realize how good we have it - to basically remember a song and then poof, you find it on Spotify seconds later - this was all any music lover dreamt of.
The crazy part now is every so often I get these flashbacks when a song comes on - moments in time, places, people - like I can remember the first time I heard Best I Ever Had by Drake on the radio…driving right past Agincourt Mall on Kennedy (shoutout the Scarborough readers).
But then it happens so much more often for songs from high school. Like when any song comes on from The Marshall Mathers LP. Or when the Scott Storch keys start playing for Still DRE.
And obviously Deadpool brought a lot of this back earlier this year.
You can hear the lyrics just watching him.

Turns out there’s science behind all of this.
Neural nostalgia. As you’re WELL AWARE, when we’re teenagers our hormones go into HYPER DRIVE messing with our minds, our nerves, our sweat glands (my palms used to sweat just typing on MSN) and when all of this happens while listening to certain music, it leaves a lasting impact on us.
THIS IS WHY YOU LOVE NICKLEBACK NOW.
I used to listen to a lot of pop punk and emo bands in high school and I recently found these two bands, who I almost instantly fell in love with because you hear so much of that 2000’s punk sound in them.
And now I lowkey want to go see them live, very lowkey.
The Slop Is Upon Us
Soooo, who else has seen -
Tupac fight Biggie in the UFC
Michael Jackson steal chicken from people in KFC
Stephen Hawking hit a halfpipe
Martin Luther King challenge Malcolm X on RAW
Queen Elizabeth jump off the top rope through a table
Kobe stream himself playing NBA2K
And the list goes on and on and on. THANK YOU SORA 2 🙃

Folks, we’re officially in the AI slop era.
And who TF knows what’s going to happen from here.
All I know is I’m finding myself scrolling faster through the AI videos to get to human made ones. Which I think is a sign - if you thought you were getting instant gratification from doom-scrolling reels, I think it’s coming even faster with these AI videos given how outrageous they are.
@movie.clips.998 These look so real 😳😳 #jakepaul #jake #paulbrothers #ai #loganpaul
The thing is, they’re going to hit a peak of outrageousness and then that will be it. I can’t see us wanting more AI videos in our feeds.
Just like when OpenAI upgraded their image generator and all of the sudden everything was spelled correctly and Ghibli images were all the rage, this is what we’re going through right now.
But I do look forward to the tasteful ones where people actually try to create art - the filmmakers who have a great vision but don’t have the budget to make a feature but could make something feel real with the right AI scenes.
I’m so curious how the internet tops itself going into week three of Sora 2 existing. Oooooh, I want to see MJ vs Lebron FR FR - someone go make that!
Spooky Sneaker Season
These days we’re getting a million colour-ways for basketball shoes. They must match with any jersey possible. At this point I gotta look at shoes and squint just to figure out which shoe they are because of all the colours every shoe comes in now.
I’ll admit it though, (most of) these Nike basketball Halloween shoes are fire and should be worn all year round.
Lemme start with the shoes you’ll never catch me in:
Top/Left - Giannis Freak 7 “Shapeshift”
Bottom/Right - G.T. Hustle 3 “Halloween” (Wemby’s shoe)

Firstly - I don’t think I’ve ever been a fan of Giannis’ shoes. It almost feels like Nike wants his shoes to look freakish on purpose, but in a bad way.
Secondly, these GT Hustle’s look like a cross between Chinese New Year and a forest fire. They’re just too…orange. Also, I’m a much bigger fan of GT Hustle 2’s.
Now for what should be worn all year:
I’m not a big fan of Devin Booker’s first silhouette, they just look like cheap boring shoes, like Nike said here you go, there’s a Swoosh on them, be happy.
BUT these Book 1 “Scorpion”s look great, definitely an elevated look to his regular shoe.

All I see is Ja Morant’s shoes on the court - I’ve never worn them myself but I keep hearing good things about his shoe. This one has got the Kobe Grinch vibes - maybe this doubles as an Xmas day shoe too?
Nike Ja 3 “Spooky Season”

And last but certainly not least, these look cool. Not my favourite KD silhouette either BUT I like these a lot for Halloween - KD 18 “Slim Reaper”.
Nike should incorporate KD’s Slim Reaper persona into this shoes more often. I don’t want to see hands on the side on more shoes but I think there’s a lot more they could be doing - maybe like a right foot Slim Reaper and left foot Ea$y Money.
I dunno, I’m just a guy who writes a newsletter about this stuff, what do I know?

Drake Lost The War
We had been in the clear for so long on Threads - no banter between Drake fans and Kendrick fans, no wild takes, and no rage baiting.
BUT all of that just got thrown out the window.

A judge has dismissed Drake’s lawsuit against Universal Music Group. Bring on the rage baiters!
The original suit argued that UMG participated in defamation of Drake by promoting Kendrick Lamar’s “Not like us” song.
This is what the judge had to say…which yo, this judge must be up to date with their rap battles to see it from this perspective:
Although the accusation that Plaintiff is a pedophile is certainly a serious one, the broader context of a heated rap battle, with incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants, would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that ‘Not Like Us’ imparts verifiable facts about Plaintiff
Drake’s legal team is appealing the decision, because why not.
But what I really wanna know is are there any bars on his next album, Iceman, that allude to any of this because those bars might not make as much sense now.
