Dulture weekly mix
The thing about this week’s mix is it’s all done on the fly - no prep, just playing the song and mixing as it goes. Check out just after the 13 minute mark to truly get what I mean.
You know how when you look at a picture of people, you can intelligently estimate what year it is?
The 80’s had big hair.
The 90’s had its grungy denim.
The 2000’s was baggy clothes everywhere
The 2010’s onwards....?
Wtf happened after the 2010s? The rest of time seems to have blended together from about 2006 onwards. Heck, we’re already coming back to retro styles in the 90’s and arguably early 2000’s. Did no year after like 2007 have any individual style?

FOUND IT!!
Is this why Linkin Park has had the top song on the Hard Rock charts for 23 weeks now?
Arguably the biggest band in the world back in 2000, they basically took nu-metal (hiphop+rock+whatever other sound like) and brought it SUPER DUPER mainstream.
The world thought that was it for the band when Chester Bennington unfortunately committed suicide in 2017. Until they brought on Emily Marcia Armstrong in September and essentially rekindled the Linkin Park of 2000’s - IMHO (no offense to the hardcore Chester fans).
Their song, The Emptiness Machine, off of the first album with Emily as lead vocals has been number 1 on Billboard’s hard rock charts for basically since the song came out with the album last year.

Check out the album, From Zero, it’s got a lot of different vibes from multiple Linkin Park eras - if you liked them back in the day, you’ll enjoy it.
Also I can’t think of any 2010 bands or beyond that could show up 25 years later and chart at #1.
Am I a hater for saying I highly doubt she’ll be a thought on music charts 25 years from now?

Who’s Going to Fyre Festival?
I had a really friendly interaction with Billy McFarland a couple years ago and it made me realize, people really are human and truly do make mistakes sometimes...it can just cost them $26M.
For those of you who are like, who’s Billy...

As soon as Billy came out of jail he began to tease about the idea of bringing Fyre Festival back and doing it properly this time aka actually going through with it. The internet clowned him for even considering it however earlier this week it was officially announced.
Taking place from a Friday to a Monday on the Isla Mujeres in Mexico, Fyre 2 is slated to host 2000 people for an “electrifying celebration of music, arts, cuisine, comedy, fashion, gaming, sports, and treasure hunting”.
If you go on https://www.fyre.mx/ it doesn’t actually tell you what you’ll be able to do at the festival BUT tickets start at $1400 for the weekend and go all the way up to $1.1M.
From what I can tell, the difference in the prices is basically either you fly yourself to Cancun and then shuttle over to the island or they fly you in a private jet to their private yacht and that takes you to the island.
Either way, you’re spending money on tickets for a festival that hasn’t actually announced any activities.
Just for fun I went through and tried booking tickets to this thing just to see what it would be like to book a ticket to a festival that currently has no events. Firstly you can choose to just book tickets.

Or you can book tickets with a partnered hotel. So I did the partnered hotel thing and it comes out to $2400 USD per person which gets you the basic Ignite ticket and 3 nights stay at Izla Hotel. So then I decided to look at room rates per night separately and bruh....

There’s another option which is the luxury hotel thing that I didn’t even bother clicking through. Again, I met Billy and he was such a nice guy so I hope this works out for him but the pricing to this festival seems super off to me.
I guess when they announce what people will actually be able to do at this thing the prices might make more sense?
The overlap between Fyre Festival 2 event purchasers and meme coin traders has to be 100%, right?

They Just Wanna Be Youtubers
Remember when you were a kid and you were asked what you wanted to be when you grew up?
All of those classic jobs like fireman, astronaut, doctor, food blogger. OK maybe not the last one although, low-key, when those travel food shows became popular (thanks to Anthony Bourdain) I definitely thought of figuring out a life of writing about my travels in a trendy blog...eventually settled for this newsletter instead shrug
Well, a recent survey was done on 910 Gen Alpha kids (born between 2010 and 2025) where 1/3 of them wanted to be YouTubers and 1/5 of them wanted to be TikTokers. Whop, a social commerce platform, found that more than half of the kids surveyed also felt like their schooling wasn’t preparing them for the rise of digital careers.

Their education wasn’t teaching them enough about how to build a personal brand online.
I want to cringe but the entrepreneur in me is actually agreeing with this.
It makes sense given these kids have grown up with iPads, internet, and Roblox. I mean heck, let ME learn how to build my own personal brand online, all I do is share IG stories about nonsense. Some 14 year old is reading this laughing at me as speak.
This all said...although the content creation world seems like it can be lucrative, content creators are a dime a dozen these days.
For context, YouTubers with 1M subs can make around $14K-$54K yearly from ad revenue.
HOWEVER...
98% of new YouTube channels fail to reach 1000 subs
Only 3% of YouTube channels have over 10K subs
Less than 1% of YouTubers make enough money to live over the US poverty line
Lowkey these 15 year olds can make more money mowing lawns this summer instead.
A Cryptic Tony Hawk Message
n 1999 the world was introduced to a skateboarding game that felt like you’re skateboarding - Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Yes, yes, you’ve probably heard of it, played it, or even perhaps dreamt about it.
There’s been a flurry of THPS games since, creating the foundation for future skateboarding games and simply advancing skate culture in general. Or maybe you’re reading this and you’re like, skateboarding is stupid, I don’t associate myself with stupid things.
Well...if you own a pair of these shoes or thought they were cool then you were influenced by skateboarding.

If you’re into these brands then you were influenced by skateboarding.

Or if you’ve used/owned/liked these cameras then you were influenced by skateboarding.

I could go on forever. At any rate, there’s a big announcement coming on March 4th that has something to do with the THPS game series. In 2000 Activision released Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remastered, which, you guessed it, combined the first and second game.
March 4th or 3/4/25 could potentially be 3+4 which would be combining the third and fourth games together now.
Bet you $5 I’m right!
