Japanese Hostess Clubs Inspiring Drake

The most slept on basketball shoes (not Jordans or Kobes)

This Week in Dulture…

🇰🇷 Kpop Summer

Dulture weekly mix

I have a confession to make, I used to go tanning and frankly speaking, it was somewhat enjoyable because of the mixes they played while you laid there for 10-15 minutes in a sunburn spaceship.

This week’s mix reminds me of those tanning days. The burn, the back sweat from lying in the bed, and the smell of synthetic coconut - you’re laughing if you’ve ever done this before too, I know it.

🎥 Top Box Office This Week

I want to love this movie so badly, I really do.

Brad Pitt annoys me as an actor, but this is good

The summer blockbuster for kids

When I drove to New York from Toronto last year, it was during some of the worst rainfall the tri-state area had ever seen.

So when we finally made it to our hotel in NJ I was like, damn, if I can drive through that for 8 hours at night, driving in NYC should be a breeze.

Obviously driving in NYC is NOT a breeze.

When we drove into the city it took me about 16 seconds to adjust to how effing aggressive people drive in that city.

And I loved it.

Go faster, HONK.

Move up, HONK.

Turn at the lights, HONK.

I’m impatient from the second I click my seatbelt, so this was my jam.

But then we were staying in another hotel, near Times Square.

And I started having flashes of having to drive through the iconic intersection of Broadway and 7th Ave - which seemed cool at first - but what happened if I started to go and got stuck in the middle of the intersection with everyone walking around.

I spent years driving through downtown Toronto, understanding how much time I had to get through and intersection so that I didn’t get stuck.

And when we made it to the iconic intersection, of course I got stuck.

Sort of.

Most of the car made it through but people started walking even when it was a red light for them - because I also learned people in NYC dgaf about traffic signals.

So I was stopped. However, luckily for me Captain America was out that day, directing foot traffic, and just so happened to see us stuck, and blocked people so we could make it through.

Earlier this week Drake was seen in downtown Toronto driving a truck through Dundas Square (Toronto’s Time Square) and as I watched the stream all I could think of was:

  1. The time I almost got stuck in Times Square

  2. I’ve driven through that intersection a million times, anyone really from Toronto never gets stuck

…Even if the entire world was chasing him as he drove around promoting his new album like he worked for a Japanese host bar.

R U Sleeping on Sabrina’s?

When we talk ball shoes obviously Jordan’s and Kobe’s are in the next breath.

I’m personally a big fan of a few of KD’s models - the latest I’ve been hooping in being the KD15 Boi 1da’s.

And right now we’re in this era of low profile ball shoes…with an outbreak of achilles injuries.

But meanwhile:

Either way, I’m all for these lows.  Obviously Jordan has his slick lows in multiple silhouettes, alongside all the Kobe models sneakerheads go bonkers over.

There’s a new basketball shoe sheriff in town.

I might be early on this one but I think we need to start grouping Sabrina Ionescu’s models in on this conversation.

The Sabrina 3’s were just announced this week and damn…you can’t tell me these aren’t up there with any Kobe model that was ever released.

Sabrina 1’s and 2’s were already fire.  And for such a good looking shoe at the lower end price point for Nike’s basketball line, these shoes have been a complete steal for years now.

They’re lightweight, sturdy, and super grippy and come in so many colour ways…and they aren’t $200+ like klunky LeBron’s

I’m just surprised there isn’t as much convo about these shoes given:

  1. They’re obviously influenced from Kobe’s given Sabrina’s relationship with him AND

  2. The entire line so far has not missed at all. Chef’s kiss 🤌

Scarlett Fever All Over Hollywood

Ah the classic combinations that never fail…

  • Peanut butter & Jelly

  • Cold beer & wings

  • A Jurassic Park film & the summer

Jurassic World: Rebirth has been out for a week now and is (obviously) merking the box office.

And as a result, with Scarlett Johannsson starring in the film, she has become the highest grossing actor in Hollywood history at $14.8B, topping the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr.

This obviously doesn’t mean that she earned $14.8B, rather the films she’s been in have made this much. That said, she’s made well over $50M off of her films - the majority of it coming from The Avengers films - naturally.

Blockbusters aside, Johansson has been in a lot of really good films, which definitely did not contribute as much to the $14.8B however, you really should check these out regardless:

Her (2013)

Even though it’s only her voice throughout the whole film, Scarlett Johansson in Her is one of her best performances given the audience needs to be captivated by not only what she says but how she sounds when she says it to believe that Joaquin Phoenix’s character can fall in love with an electronic device - so damn good.

Lost in Translation (2003)

I got so lost in this film watching it over and over that I failed to even realize Johansson was only 18 when she starred in it opposite Bill Murray. The pacing, the framing of the shots, the lighting, the mood this film sets, Lost in Translation is the kind of movie where you just sit back and let the characters live in the world while you feel like a fly on the wall - also this won best screenplay at the Oscars for good reason.

Match Point (2005)

This is one of those films where you aren’t exactly sure where it’s going to go. It’s a romance thriller with a pretty good ending, if you ask me. Another one of Johansson’s roles where she was breaking out in Hollywood as an A-lister.

We all know Scarlett Johansson had made it by 2011, just ask KD.

Prepare for Kpop Summer

It’s almost like Squid Games 3 opened the door for the rest of the Korean entertainment industry to pop into your feeds this summer - it’s just getting started.

After Squid Games, KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix and is currently one of the most popular, if not THE most popular movies in general right now.

And don’t get my started on the film’s soundtrack, which you will undoubtedly hear at some point, most likely multiple times, in the near future - if you haven’t already - it’s all over music charts everywhere.

And then there’s the Kpop tours touching down in Canada and the US lead by none other than these 4:

Blackpink, for those of you who live under a rock

And if you know nothing about Kpop other than what I’ve told you, just know that this group called Baby Monster is coming and they’re most likely going to be just as big as Blackpink 👇️

Bruh, there’s so many of them in these groups, they got 2 subs

And then there’s this whole rap movement in Kpop that I’m still trying to wrap my head around but Stray Kids is one of the big ones currently. They already came to North America and are currently finishing their tour off in Europe.

This was a first of its kind in Korea apparently

So there you have it, you’re all caught up on Kpop. It’s going to slap you in the face like a humid hot day.

And for anyone reading who is a big Kpop fan - I tried my best!
