It's been THIRTY YEARS since Scream

This Week in Dulture…

Approx 5 minute read:

📺️ Ads that double as a full content series

🙈 Human Made is great if you can find it

Dulture weekly mix

Man, all I can say to you is the urge to dance comes out of nowhere sometimes. And sometimes it comes from these damn Friday mixes.

In all truth, I listen to these at night. So while I’ve been telling you to listen while you’re on the toilet in the morning reading this, you really should be listening at night - I think that’s been the problem all along.

Timing is everything, innit?

There’s nothing like a good horror franchise.

You know what I’m talking about:

  • Jump scares

  • Stupid characters who always choose to run upstairs

  • The girl who always seems to survive

  • And the killer who you think is dead but comes back for part 2-6

Duh! Why’d you Google it you idiot

Lowkey, I was hoping Google was going to say August or May or something just so I could sound more interesting.

The same way people get attached to their favourite character in K-Pop Demon Hunters, they also get attached to their favourite slasher.

My wife and I recently re-watched Scream and I gotta say, it holds up man. The plot isn’t this try hard, obviously he’s right around the corner corn-fest of a slasher.

It actually does a really good job in hooking you into the plot with its now FAMOUS opening scene.

The thing about Scream, that I think a lot of horror films could learn from today, is that it doesn’t try so hard to scare you. The film is famous for breaking the 4D wall with its satire of horror film references - especially at the end…which I won’t ruin if you haven’t seen it.

Don’t get me wrong, the film has its moments of goofy, typical comedy to lighten up the mood just enough for the scares to hit you harder. But it’s done in a way where the film knows what it is, tells you what it is, and proceeds to still give you what you want out of a horror film.

And the sequels are pretty decent as well - although I’ve lost count and they all blend into each other now.

…so yeah, I guess I just remember them being decent? **shrug**

Next year Scream 7 comes out marking the film’s 30th anniversary. They remade Halloween enough times, I’d definitely be down for a Scream remake at some point with the right director…although Wes Craven is one of the kings of horror so I don’t know how you do better than him.

Also how has it been THIRTY YEARS since Scream came out??
(I actually wrote 20th anniversary at first then realized 1996→2026 is NOT 20 years…bruh)

Either way, it was a great film to watch while my wife and I played battle shots in the basement.

The more ghetto the better

Rookie Patches

You know when you’re driving behind someone and they have the I’m A nEw DrIvEr sticker on their car - this kinda feels like that.

In a twist of fate - or whatever - the NBA is stealing a page out of the MLB’s book and having its rookies wear a patch on their jersey that says kick me, I’m new here “NBA Debut”.

After their debut game, the patch will be taken off and given to Topps, who will affix them to the appropriate player’s card, which will also be autographed, and then put into packs for you to buy next year.

So you can do this:

The league just formed an exclusive partnership with Topps which is owned by Fanatics, which does basically all the merch for the league, so expect there to be even more trading card talk within the NBA in the near future.

Kinda Commercial, Kinda Not

The Super Bowl is by far and away the most interesting time to watch TV ads.

The worst time is when you’re watching a MrBeast video because for whatever reason, his videos make you watch a ton of the ad before you’re allowed to skip.

Ads have come a long way, where people definitely try a lot harder to grab and maintain your attention these days.

Iconic Arts, a company based out of LA and Tokyo, is taking what it means to feature a brand in content and flipping it on its head.

Conceptually, instead of the brand being front and center for a quick 15 second ad, that you’re going to skip anyway, they’ve created a formula where the brand lives within content over a series of pieces - the first one being their original series made for YouTube, Golden Gai.

Suntory is a major investor in Iconic Arts and so this first project was inspired by the actual Golden Gai drinking spot in Tokyo.

The mini series is about a guy from LA who visits Tokyo and gets inspired to open his own Japanese bar back home. In creating this series, it gives Suntory all kinds of opportunity to have product placement - from the bottles of Toki whiskey being poured to cans of Maru-hi placed everywhere .

The series itself is a 6 part easy watch, ~10 minute per video, simple story line, just a light watch. But if you know that Suntory is meant to have product placement throughout the series, then you know why it was done the way its done.

I’d love to watch more content these days where products are advertised alongside an actual story I want to watch. I don’t need another Monday.com ad - even my 7 year old knows what a CRM is at this point.

Pokemon Collabs EVERYWHERE

I don’t know about you but when I go into a streetwear store, I don’t want the minimalistic vibe where it feels like there’s next to nothing to buy in the store.

If I wanted it to feel like there was nothing there I’d buy Kim Kardashian’s kitchen sink:

Even the water could clog that stupid sink

Alas this was my feeling as I glided…glid? glided? As I f*cking walked into the Human Made store in Harajuku, Tokyo.

Was I stoked to go in? Hell yeah, there was no line up to get in (not uncommon to have a line up for that stupid store).

Did I pass through all 6 t-shirts hanging on the rack in about 10 seconds - hell yes I did. There was enough space between each shirt on the rack to hang a school bag in between and they still wouldn’t touch the bag.

I was so disappointed man. Japan’s cheaper, the store is right there, and the staff aren’t pretentious a-holes who stare at your shoes and then give you cut eye as you walk in.

As someone who appreciates a well made, fun brand, I’ve yet to pick up anything from Human Made. I always figured I’d go to the store in Tokyo because they’d have the selection and pricing would be better. Yeah, right.

Last week they launched their Pokemon collab and I saw this a few days before and thought, FINALLY, a reason to try harder to pick up something off of their website.

But I forgot.

B*tch.

So maybe I try and go for the Pokemon x Adidas collab releasing next year?

Dawg, just make more clothes - Zara and H&M do it, you can too. C’mon Pharrell and Nigo!
