ISSUE #100
This one is a doozey!

This Week in Dulture…
Approx 4 minute read:
🏆️ Made it to the 100 club
🎤 Japan’s hottest rapper answers my questions
🤡 Why did they trade Luka Doncic?
🛹 Your favourite skate/surf brands are in trouble
To say you’ve done something 100 times over is an accomplishment.
To have failed 100 times over is also an accomplishment…as long as you kept going on to the 101th time…otherwise you’re a failure, I’m sorry.

All jokes aside, 100 issues ago I started Dulture thinking it would be a fun side project to just do what the likes of Big Brother and Thrasher did in the early 2000’s - talk sh*t about whatever they wanted and make it sound interesting.
So here we are - still talking sh*t…
…through three iterations of this thing now…

The evolution of Dulture
The beauty of building something for yourself is you can have as much fun with it as you want without worrying about what people think. And oftentimes, the more fun you have, the more it becomes a thing. And if you’re lucky, sometimes these things end up funding your life - which is always a nice bonus.
Just ask my best friend Adam, who DJ’s for nobody in his apartment, that doesn’t stop him from dropping mix after mix that you absolutely should be subscribing to.
If you’re passionate about something, the amount of times you fail shouldn’t impact your willingness to continue and try.
It’s only fitting that in the 100th issue I was lucky enough to grab a quick quote from the CEO of the platform that has changed my life.
Here’s to the next 100 issues…
DM’s with King Miyachi
Back in 2021, while bunkering in my house, the amount of rabbit holes I found myself going down was limitless. It honestly felt like I was burning a hole through YouTube’s algo with no end in sight.
This wasn’t a bad thing though given all the new music I ended up discovering. Specifically I came across this song and instantly I had to know more:
Dude flowed like he was in Tokyo and New York at the same time.
Miyachi is originally from New York but while growing up, he spent summer months in Japan where ,whether he knew it or not, he built the foundational bridge between the East and the West that you can hear in his music.
While I had his music on repeat in the car, a few months later he released Konbini Confessions and I was hooked in a whole new way. After all, when did you ever see a rapper go out into the streets and interview people?
Wait wait wait, when did you ever see a rapper, dressed like a businessman, holding a Chu-Hi, go out and interview people in the streets of Tokyo?
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait…
I caught up with Miyachi via rapid fire DM’s

Dipset or The Lox?
Dipset.
Family Mart or Lawson?
Lawson.
(Although I wonder if this answer changes at all after Nigo announcing his partnership with Family Mart earlier this week)
Fav neighbourhood to film Konbini Confessions in?
Shinjuku.
One spot in Tokyo to make a New Yorker feel like home?
Doesn’t exist.
One spot in New York to make a Tokyo citizen feel like home?
Kenka or tomo21.
For the love of all things holy in hiphop, you definitely shouldn’t be sleeping on Miyachi.
And do yourself a favour and check out the season 3 finale of Konbini Confessions.
The Most Shocking Trade in NBA History
Picture this. You’re like 24/25 years old. You just carried your team to the NBA finals last season. Your city loves you, your teammates love you, and supposedly you’re the franchise player they’re building the team around.
Not to mention you’re on pace to be one of the best players to ever play in the NBA, period.
AND THEN THEY TRADE YOU TO THE LAKERS.

There were moments last season where I had questions: is Luka Doncic even trying? Why is he so slow to run back on defense? Is he getting chubbier? How is he scoring every basket for his team?
Well, according to the Mavs’ GM, Nico Harrison, leading your team by scoring like a mad man every night is not good enough.
I believe that defense wins championships. I believe that getting an All-defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and. inthe future.
I’m no NBA GM but when you finish in 11th place in the conference one year and then go all the way to the finals the next year, you have to think the team is finally coming together to do something special.
And maybe, just maybe, you keep the team together to see what they can do.
Or at the very least you keep the star players, who are arguably two of the best players in the league (Kyrie & Luka), together and add around them if you think you need change on the team.
I could care less about watching the Lakers so I guess I won’t be watching Luka anytime soon.

Is it Billa-bye bye?

If you’re looking for a Billabong store in the near future you might be out of luck. This week Liberated Brands, which owns the likes of Billabong, Quiksiliver, Roxy, Volcom, and a bunch of other brands that made you look emo in the early 2000’s filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy earlier this week.
And although the brands will still be sold in other retailers like PacSun in the US and SportChek in Canada, CEO Todd Hymel blamed the brands’ demise on the continuous rise of fast fashion over the past couple of years, pointing at companies who produce super cheap clothes that can be delivered in days.
I mean, a t-shirt is a t-shirt? Whether it has a Volcom logo screen printed on it or “F*ck you, you f*cking f*ck” on it, it’s just a t-shirt at the end the day - something tells me Liberated Brands couldn’t hold on to the consumer’s wallet the way it once did 10-15 years ago.
This all said, Quiksilver, Billabong, Roxy, and Volcom all have 60% off site-wide sales going on right now. New sandals here we come!
