Gen Z Isn't Searching with Google

Kanye West's Graduation 17 Years Ago

Why do we remember random things for YEARS but forget super important things in a matter of minutes?

And women do it too so don’t even start!

I have all these random memories that have essentially been burned into my mind. I can recall them like it was yesterday and with a lot of vividness as well.

Like the time I cheated on my spelling test on my birthday in grade 3 because I couldn’t remember how to spell “leprechaun”.

Andrew, just because it’s your birthday doesn’t mean you get to cheat on your test. Bring your test here.

Mrs. Rodriguez - Grade 3 teacher

Or the time we threw snowballs at cars as they drove by, only to have the guy do a complete 180 in the middle of the road, turn his car around like it was Fast and the Furious and proceed to drive down our street chasing us. Then he gets out of his car, chases us on foot and before we know it, we’re caught.

It actually started out with buses and progressed quickly to cars

And for some reason I always remember buying Graduation by Kanye West. I drove from the east end in Toronto all the way to Yorkdale Mall in the west end just to buy it.

Did I have closer malls I could go to?
Yes.
Why did I go so far then?
I don’t know.

I wasn’t the biggest Kanye fan back then but there was all this hype around Kanye and 50 Cent releasing their albums on the same day and who was going to do more album sales. So I had to pick a side. And I chose the streetwear cyber punk Kanye.

Still my favourite Kanye to date.

And one of my favourite albums to date in general. And arguably his second best album behind My Dark Twisted Fantasy. There’s so many bangers on Graduation and frankly, a little something for everyone.

I think this album officially showed the world how creative Kanye could be, from the Daft Punk influences, to the Murakami art, to collabs with the likes of Chris Martin. Just as T-Pain popularized auto-tune at the time, Kanye used Graduation as a platform to elevate auto-tune stylistically and essentially transform hip hop as we know it today.

Although the album was released 17 years ago, I still remember driving home listening to NAAAAAA NAAAAA NA NA Wait til I get my money right…

This week's issue is a 3 minute read:

Gen Z aren’t “Googling”, they’re “Searching”

You know you’ve made it as a company and brand when people use your brand name as a verb to do stuff.

Fedexing a package.
Ubering to someone’s house.
Photoshopping your face on someone else’s body.

I can’t say the list goes on and on because it really is a special when a brand can ingrain themselves so much in your life that you think of them as an action you do versus a company.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the first TV show to use Google as a verb, four years before the term “googling” was added to the dictionary.

But as expected, eventually a new generation comes along to uproot everything you’ve worked so hard for - that is if you’re Google. Yes, you guessed it, the sock+Croc wearing Gen Z’s are scrapping good ol Google for Tiktok and Instagram when searching for stuff.

When I first heard of this my immediate reaction was, they have too much time on their hands to sit there and scroll through videos and images to find what they want. Google at least gives you text you can preview quickly.

So I had to try for myself…

First I searched up this in Google:

And this was my first result on Tiktok…I’m not joking, I promise!

@tech_circuit

So that's why there's no iPhone 9!🤯 #tech #apple #iphone

Then I searched up where the best sushi was in Toronto and I got a standard page result like this:

So then I checked Tiktok and this was my first result. I wasn’t expecting AYCE to come up but here we are:

@cheatdayto

Where you find the Best AYCE Sushi in Toronto #toronto #torontofood #sushi

Lastly, I gave Google and Tiktok the ultimate test, who is the GOAT in basketball.

This was all I needed to see:

The first result on Tiktok gave me the below, which has lead me to believe Gen Z is now officially controlling the algo on Tiktok:

The verdict from a millennial born on the forgotten side of the generation:

Google gets you what you need a lot faster than searching social media. BUT BUT BUT - the true winner is Perplexity.ai - why are you using anything else at this point?

Been Around the World… 🎵🚢

Where my digital nomads at? Y’all wanna live on a boat for 275 days or nah?

This week the 275 day Royal Caribbean cruise around the world came to an end. Split up into 4 legs, you got..

Ultimate Americas Cruise - 36 destinations, 64 nights
Ultimate Asia Pacific Cruise - 40 destinations, 87 nights
Ultimate Africa & Southern Europe Cruise - 39 destinations, 63 nights
Ultimate Europe & Beyond Cruise - 40 destinations, 63 nights

If you signed up for all four legs, you basically lived on a boat for 9 months, visited over 60 countries and got to see basically all of the world wonders.

Wondering how much it cost? If you did the cheapest stateroom with no balcony or windows, you’re looking at $88K USD. Now if you did the Royal Suite, that sets you back $1.2M USD. Individual legs ranged from like $19K USD to $37K depending on the leg and the type of room you stay in.

On the boat itself you get your food and drink taken care of, laundry and folding services, pools, spa, entertainment, casino, and a bunch of other bells and whistles that Royal Caribbean tends to have on their boats. Suffice to say you could probably occupy your time enough throughout the days you’re cruising and then each time you dock you’re basically in a new country

The land lubber option

When we were in Mexico they were offering travel packages from Royalton (owned by Marriot) where if you paid something like $50K USD yearly you could essentially stay at any of their resorts for as long as you like throughout the year.

If I had to choose between living at a resort or on a cruise ship, I’d take the cruise ship. The food is better, you get to see so much more, and it just feels safer being on a boat than in a resort - not to say resorts aren’t safe either 🤷‍♂️

Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You: Trump

As you’re well aware, we don’t discuss politics (or the NFL) in Dulture. But when the trailer for Donald Trump’s biopic drops, you know we’re going to be all over that.

While the trailer for the film just dropped this week, the film itself had a private screening last week to open the Toronto International Film Festival

Sebastian Stan stars as a young Donald Trump in the 1970’s and 80’s trying to become the real estate mogul he is today. The Apprentice comes out in theatres in October.

Chat, are we watching this?
